67. Faithless

Before Jolie left with Stan and the rest of her pack on the journey back to Mecca, she had witnessed the Entity and Stan meeting on the dirt road outside the building where they met with the Holy Men. The Entity was writing something in the sand, Stan looked at it and shook his head up and down and then the Entity erased the sand words. Then Stan looked toward her and quickly turned away…but not before she saw them.

The trip back to Mecca was short. It was still dark but the whole city was washed by light from a full moon making it easy to watch for a safe place to land the two Elite packs and their passengers. There were flying machines, men on horse and camel patrolling the streets along with men on foot so Stan and Bill searched for an area just outside the city walls where shadows from some of the perimeter buildings would act as camouflage.

“Bill!” Stan was motioning with his right hand, “there is a spot about a hundred yards to your left that has some high sand dunes that should provide enough cover for us and hopefully keep the dogs away.” Bill looked where Stan was pointing and agreed. The two Elite packs along with their passengers slowly dropped onto the sand behind the dunes. From this vantage point they could see a large part of the west wall that bordered this part of Mecca. The wall was being patrolled by a large contingent of  armed humans and a number of them were armed with….dogs.

Stan and Bill were discussing the plan for locating the Spiritual Guides one more time. There was no doubt that after the first encounter the Guides were hiding someplace deep in Mecca and probably protected by half of the Arabian least that is what Stan and Bill thought. Jolie was listening to their conversation. She knew they were both hoping she would be able to use her unique skills to locate the Guides again. But they were also concerned about the somewhat reckless use of her powers. They didn’t want her to engage with the humans at all if they could help it.

“They don’t really understand what you can do. And you have to be more careful how you use “our” powers.” Jolie’s Lite was being emphatic in its tone.” I don’t think they trust me.” Jolie replied. “I did what they asked me to do. And now they know I can hear them so they write words in the sand. I don’t think I like them anymore.”

The little one’s Lite hesitated for a second. “They are afraid if you and me. The other Lite is not able to connect with me even though I am a product of his transformation process. It is confused and concerned because it thinks we have another plan for this mission.” Jolie thought about that statement then asked her Lite, “do we have another plan?” The Lite wrote a word in the sand at Jolie’s feet…..”Yes.”
